Starling
Reducing accidents by bringing dynamic real time pedestrian safety to junctions and streets.
What is Starling?
Starling aims to revolutionise pedestrian safety at pedestrian crossings by reducing the risk of accidents and near-misses. We want pedestrians, vehicles, and cyclists to safely and efficiently share the street and the road, making towns and cities safer and more attractive for all.
Starling prioritises the safety of pedestrians to make our towns and cities safer and more positive places. We aim to reduce the number of accidents and near misses by creating a more efficient traffic flow and pedestrians. This provides the owners and operators of our cities and towns and their amenities with safer streets and public spaces.
The Starling product suite consists of:
Starling Intelligence - a real-time and playback road user analysis
Starling Detector - a smart kerbside detection with pedestrian data capture for signalised crossings
Starling Control - an AI powered dynamic signal controller, utilising real-time analysis, decisioning and actuation of traffic signalling systems
Starling Intelligence
Starling Intelligence is a real-time and playback road user analysis. It does this by gathering anonymous data on the use and behaviours of users of the street. On the roads or pavements, historic aggregations of this data will contribute to the improvement of transport strategy modelling, using highly accurate data about vehicle and pedestrian movements, allowing operators to understand their network's current state.
The solution provides network managers with a tool to gather detailed usage and behaviour data to contribute to assessing all types of road networks, including temporary cycle lanes.
Starling Detector
Starling Detector is an intelligent kerbside pedestrian detection system that integrates with the existing road traffic signal controllers to provide real-time pedestrian behaviour analysis such as volumetric assessment and pedestrian delay times.
Starling Control
Starling Control is the core product that runs a real-time analysis of all street users, applies localised safety rules, and then actuates signaling systems or traffic controllers. We aim to reduce the number of accidents and near misses by creating a more efficient traffic flow and pedestrians. This provides the owners and operators of our cities and towns with safer streets and public spaces.
How does Starling work?
Classifies objects & trajectories in real-time from roadside camera feeds
Identifies pedestrians, bikes, cars, lorries, analyses trajectories, predicts possible accidents or near-misses, generates danger quotients.
Instantly transmits data & instructions to control road infrastructure
Using industry-standard protocols, to control traditional road products – LED lighting, interactive surfaces, street signage – so they respond and adapt to real-time conditions, through warnings, rerouting or dynamic zoning.
Builds on localised rules to upgrade crossings & intersections
Responds to pedestrian behaviour & gestures.
Feeds directly into ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems)
Gives autonomous vehicles ability to “see around corners”; provides the entire city with predictive flow data; contributes to 3rd-party revenue-generating commercial services.
Generates data for alerts, reports & external systems
Inform urban development zoning, infrastructure resource allocation, local business intelligence, and environmental strategies; drives 3rd-party data-oriented services & solutions.
